Subject Combinations and Additional Subject
CBSE Class 12 students take five main subjects and may take an optional sixth (additional) subject. The rules below are from the CBSE Curriculum 2026-27.
Subject Structure
Subject slot | Rule |
|---|---|
Subject 1 | A language — Hindi or English |
Subjects 2 to 5 | Electives or another language, as per valid combinations |
Subject 6 (optional) | Additional subject — any elective, language or skill subject |
Internally assessed | Health and Physical Education, Work Experience and General Studies |
How the Additional Subject Helps
As per the curriculum, the first five subjects registered are treated as the main subjects. If a student fails in one of the main subjects, the additional subject can replace it, provided Hindi or English remains among the five subjects counted.
Valid Combinations
Schools must offer subjects according to the Scheme of Studies; invalid combinations are not accepted.
Subjects involving laboratory work need CBSE approval for the school.
Subject changes are not allowed after LOC submission, except in transfer cases.
Key Takeaways
Five main subjects + one optional additional subject.
One subject must be Hindi or English.
The additional subject can replace a failed main subject (with the language condition).
Pro Tip: Choosing an additional subject you enjoy can act as a safety net — it can replace a main subject if needed.
