Overview
Application Process
IELTS registration is available throughout the year, with candidates selecting an available test date, test centre and test type according to their requirements. In India, IELTS can be booked through the official IDP IELTS India registration system.

How to Apply for IELTS
1. Choose the Right IELTS Test
Before registration, select the test that matches your purpose:
IELTS Academic – mainly for higher education and certain professional requirements
IELTS General Training – commonly used for migration, work and training purposes
IELTS for UKVI – for UK visa and immigration routes where specifically required
IELTS Life Skills – for specific UK visa and immigration requirements
Always check the exact English-language test required by your university, employer or immigration authority before booking.
2. Visit the Official IELTS Booking Website
For candidates registering in India, visit the official IDP IELTS India website and select the option to register or book an IELTS test.
3. Select Test Format, City and Date
Choose your preferred:
Test type
Test format
Test city/test centre
Available test date
Available dates and seats are shown during the booking process. IELTS has multiple test dates throughout the year rather than one fixed annual examination date.
4. Complete the Application Form
Enter your personal and contact details carefully. Your name and date of birth should match your passport, as these details are used for your test records and result documentation.
Depending on the registration route, candidates may need to provide a clear copy of their passport. IDP's current registration guidance lists the passport copy requirements for applicants in India.
5. Make the Payment
After completing the application, pay the applicable IELTS test fee using the payment methods available through the official booking system. After successful payment, candidates receive confirmation of their booking by email.
The standard IELTS test fee in India currently varies according to the test type; candidates should verify the latest fee shown on the official booking portal before making payment.
6. Receive Booking Confirmation
After successful registration, the candidate receives confirmation containing relevant test details, date, location and booking information. Candidates should check their registered email address and mobile number regularly for updates from the test provider.
7. Download the Test-Day Information
Before the test, candidates should log in to their IELTS dashboard and check their test-day instructions. IDP currently states that the test slip is available 48–72 hours before the test through the candidate dashboard.
Documents Required
Document | Requirement |
|---|---|
Valid Passport | Required for identity verification |
Passport Copy | May be required during registration |
Personal Details | Must match the identification document |
Payment Details | Required to complete booking |
Candidates should carry the same original identification document used during registration when appearing for the test. Requirements can vary by test centre, so the latest instructions should be checked before the test.
IELTS Application Through Different Modes
Candidates in India can register through different methods, including online registration and, where available, registration through an IDP branch or authorised registration partner.
Important Points Before Applying
Make sure you select the correct IELTS test type before payment. Check the admission or immigration requirements of your destination, verify that your personal information exactly matches your passport, and select a test date that gives you enough time to receive your result and complete your application.
For students planning to study abroad, guidance can also help with country selection, university and course shortlisting, IELTS requirements, application documentation and the overall admission process.
