Exam Pattern and Syllabus
Syllabus
The MAT 2026 syllabus covers five major aptitude areas: Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, and Economic and Business Environment.
The All India Management Association (AIMA) publishes the examination structure and sample questions to help candidates understand the test. Its main examination page does not provide a comprehensive, exhaustive chapter-wise syllabus. Therefore, the topics below are a practical preparation checklist based on the five official sections and the question types illustrated in AIMA's sample material, rather than a guaranteed list of every topic that may appear in the examination.
MAT 2026 Syllabus: Section-Wise Overview
Section | Questions | Main Preparation Areas |
|---|---|---|
Language Comprehension | 30 | Reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and verbal ability |
Intelligence and Critical Reasoning | 30 | Logical relationships, analytical puzzles and critical reasoning |
Mathematical Skills | 30 | Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and numerical problem-solving |
Data Analysis and Sufficiency | 30 | Tables, charts, data interpretation and data sufficiency |
Economic and Business Environment | 30 | Economic developments, business news and general awareness |
1. Language Comprehension Syllabus
The Language Comprehension section evaluates reading ability, vocabulary, grammar and understanding of written English. Candidates should practise interpreting passages and identifying the correct use of language.
Important topics to prepare:
Reading comprehension
Synonyms and antonyms
Vocabulary and word usage
Idioms and phrases
Grammar and sentence correction
Fill-in-the-blanks
Error identification
Sentence completion
Para jumbles and sentence arrangement
Main idea, inference and conclusions from passages
Preparation strategy: Read editorials, articles and opinion pieces regularly. Practise comprehension questions under timed conditions and revise vocabulary and grammar through short daily exercises.
2. Intelligence and Critical Reasoning Syllabus
This section tests logical thinking, analytical reasoning and the ability to draw conclusions from given information. Candidates should practise both individual reasoning questions and puzzles involving multiple conditions.
Important topics to prepare:
Analogy and classification
Number and letter series
Coding-decoding
Blood relations
Direction sense
Seating arrangements
Logical puzzles
Syllogisms
Statement and conclusion
Statement and assumption
Cause and effect
Assertion and reason
Logical sequence and relationship-based questions
Critical reasoning
Preparation strategy: Solve topic-wise questions before attempting mixed reasoning sets. Use diagrams and tables to organise information in puzzles, and review the logic behind incorrect answers rather than memorising answer patterns.
3. Mathematical Skills Syllabus
Mathematical Skills assesses numerical aptitude and mathematical problem-solving. Candidates should strengthen fundamental concepts and practise calculations accurately under time pressure.
Important topics to prepare:
Number systems
Simplification and basic calculations
Percentages
Ratio and proportion
Averages
Profit, loss and discount
Simple and compound interest
Time and work
Pipes and cisterns
Time, speed and distance
Mixtures and alligation
Algebra and linear equations
Geometry
Mensuration
Permutations and combinations
Probability
Preparation strategy: Revise mathematical fundamentals and common calculation methods. Practise questions at different difficulty levels, maintain a formula notebook and take timed quizzes to improve speed and accuracy.
4. Data Analysis and Sufficiency Syllabus
This section evaluates the ability to interpret numerical information, identify relationships in data and determine whether the information provided is sufficient to solve a problem.
Data Interpretation
Practise reading and analysing data presented through:
Tables
Bar graphs
Line graphs
Pie charts
Mixed graphs and charts
Caselet-based data sets
Comparison and percentage-based data
Questions may involve ratios, averages, percentage changes, differences, totals and comparisons across multiple categories.
Data Sufficiency
Data sufficiency questions assess whether the statements provided contain enough information to answer a question. Candidates must judge the sufficiency of the available information without necessarily performing every possible calculation.
Preparation strategy: Improve calculation speed and practise interpreting data accurately. Pay attention to units, percentages and conditions in charts. For data sufficiency, focus on determining whether the information is adequate, rather than automatically solving the entire numerical problem.
5. Economic and Business Environment Syllabus
The Economic and Business Environment section assesses awareness of economic developments, business-related events and important national and international issues.
Important areas to prepare:
Indian economy and economic indicators
Business and corporate news
Banking and financial developments
Government policies and economic initiatives
Union Budget and taxation developments
National and international current affairs
Important business organisations
Major mergers, acquisitions and corporate announcements
International trade and economic institutions
Important appointments, awards and business personalities
Major developments affecting industries and markets
These are recommended preparation areas, not an official exhaustive chapter list. The relevance of current-affairs topics changes over time.
Preparation strategy: Read reliable business news regularly and maintain concise monthly current-affairs notes. Revise important economic terms, government initiatives, financial developments and business events. Practise questions based on both factual awareness and basic understanding of economic concepts.
How to Prepare for the MAT 2026 Syllabus
A structured preparation plan should cover every section and include regular practice tests.
Step 1: Assess your starting level. Take a diagnostic mock test to identify strong and weak areas.
Step 2: Build conceptual clarity. Revise grammar, reasoning methods, mathematics fundamentals and data interpretation techniques before moving to more complex questions.
Step 3: Practise section-wise questions. Complete topic-based exercises to improve accuracy and identify recurring mistakes.
Step 4: Prepare for Economic and Business Environment. Follow business news and revise current-affairs notes consistently instead of leaving this section entirely until the final days.
Step 5: Take full-length mock tests. Practise completing 150 questions within the prescribed 120 minutes and review your performance after each test.
Step 6: Revise strategically. Focus on weak concepts, frequently repeated mistakes and calculations or question types that take too long to solve.
