XAT 2027 Preparation Tips

XAT 2027 will be held on January 3, 2027. Some of the tips that you should follow while preparing for XAT 2027 are listed below:

Build a section-wise preparation plan: Follow section-wise preparation tips for XAT 2027

  • Verbal and Logical Ability: Read 2-3 quality articles daily from English newspapers or business journals. Focus on understanding the structure of arguments. Practice critical reasoning and RCs from XAT past papers.

  • Decision Making: Read and understand XAT DM questions from past papers, then analyse why each answer is correct.

  • Quantitative Ability and DI: Focus more on geometry, modern math (probability, permutation-combination), and complex DI sets. Practice both speed and accuracy.

  • General Knowledge: Follow a good monthly GK magazine and keep track of major business and economic news from July 2026 onwards. Take GK seriously if XLRI is your goal as the score is used in XLRI admission.

Solve Previous Year XAT Papers- Solve previous year XAT papers to learn the difficulty level across years. Solving these papers gives you a real sense of what to expect.

  • Solve at least the last 10 years of XAT papers under timed conditions

  • Pay extra attention to the Decision Making section, which many CAT-focused aspirants underestimate

  • Analyse every wrong answer to understand the reasoning pattern behind the correct choice

Take Full-Length Mock Tests from October 2026: Aim for at least 15-20 mocks before the exam. After each mock, spend time analysing wrong answers and understand section-specific weaknesses.

  • Attempt the official XLRI mock test on xatonline in.

  • Practice finishing Part 1 within 170 minutes while attempting at least 67 of 75 questions

  • Track your section-wise performance across mocks to spot weak areas early

Handle Negative Marking Strategically: XAT has two types of penalties in Part 1. A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. Leaving more than 8 questions unattempted costs 0.10 marks per blank beyond the 8th.

  • Attempt a question if you have at least 50% confidence in the answer

  • Keep a mental count of blanks; if you are approaching 8, attempt the remaining questions even with partial confidence

Do Not Ignore GK if XLRI is Your Target: Many candidates skip GK because it does not affect the XAT percentile. But XLRI evaluates your GK score separately during shortlisting.

  • Spend 20-30 minutes daily on current affairs from July 2026 onwards

  • Focus on business news, economic policy, government schemes, and international events

  • Keep notes of major awards, sports outcomes, and top appointments from the past 12 months before the exam

On discussion forums such as Reddit, a user shared some preparation tips that you should follow while preparing for XAT.

  • Decision Making- This is a new section and is unique compared to other MBA exams. Use the last 10-15 years' XAT papers as the primary source of preparation.

  • VARC & QA Sections- The questions are very similar to CAT but a bit more difficult.

  • GK section- You can read past and current newspapers for current affairs, and will help in VARC prep as well.
