Who Can Apply for GATE 2027?

GATE 2027 is open to candidates who are currently studying in the 3rd year or higher of an undergraduate degree programme, as well as candidates who have already completed an eligible government-approved degree.

Eligible academic backgrounds include:

  • Engineering and Technology

  • Architecture

  • Science

  • Commerce

  • Arts

  • Humanities

Students pursuing B.E., B.Tech., B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. and other eligible undergraduate programmes can therefore appear if they satisfy the applicable eligibility conditions. The official eligibility criteria also state that there is no age limit and no restriction on the number of attempts.

Can Final-Year Students Apply?

Yes. Candidates who have completed their qualifying degree or are in the required year of their undergraduate programme can apply, subject to the official eligibility requirements.

Students should also check the eligibility requirements of the specific postgraduate programme or institute they plan to apply to after GATE, because qualifying GATE alone does not guarantee admission.

GATE 2027 Application Fee

The application fee depends on the candidate category and whether the application is submitted during the regular or extended registration period.

GATE 2027 Exam Dates

GATE 2027 will be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) over three weekends:

  • February 6 & 7, 2027

  • February 13 & 14, 2027

  • February 20 & 21, 2027

The official schedule is subject to change, so candidates should regularly check the GATE 2027 website for updates.

GATE 2027: 30 Test Papers

GATE 2027 will be conducted across 30 test papers. The official list includes papers such as Computer Science & Information Technology (CS), Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DA), Electrical Engineering (EE), Electronics & Communication Engineering (EC), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Civil Engineering (CE), Biotechnology (BT), and several others.

A new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper has also been introduced for GATE 2027. The official website has also revised the syllabus for GATE 2027, so candidates should check the latest syllabus before beginning their preparation.

Can Candidates Choose Two GATE Papers?

Yes. A candidate can appear for one or up to two GATE papers, but the second paper must be selected from the combinations permitted by the GATE 2027 authorities.

For example, CS candidates have permitted combinations including DA, EC, GE, MA, ME, PH, RA and ST, subject to the official combination rules.

Candidates should check the official two-paper combination list before selecting their papers.

DigiLocker Requirement for GATE 2027

One important change for GATE 2027 is the use of DigiLocker during registration.

The official GATE 2027 website states that registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for Indian nationals. Candidates can use a verified DigiLocker account, while the current guidelines also provide an option to register through an unverified account with the required scrutiny process.

Candidates are also advised not to delete the DigiLocker account used during GATE 2027 application submission, because future communications may be associated with that account.

Documents and Details to Keep Ready

Before completing the GATE 2027 application, candidates should carefully check the required information and documents.

Important items include:

  • Valid photo identification

  • Recent photograph

  • Signature

  • Category certificate, wherever applicable

  • PwD-related documents, wherever applicable

  • DigiLocker account and required verification

  • Academic and personal details

  • Preferred examination cities

  • Selected GATE paper or permitted two-paper combination

Candidates should carefully verify their information before final submission because corrections after application submission are subject to the official correction window and applicable conditions.

What If You Miss the September 27 Deadline?

Candidates who are unable to complete their application by September 27, 2026 have an extended registration opportunity until October 5, 2026 with a late fee.

However, students planning to appear for GATE 2027 should avoid waiting until the final hours. Application issues involving photographs, documents, DigiLocker verification, payment or personal details may require additional time to resolve.

What Happens After GATE 2027 Registration?

After completing the application, candidates should regularly check their application status through the GATE application portal.

The official FAQ explains that applications can go through stages such as payment received, scrutiny, defect rectification and application accepted. Candidates should monitor their application status and respond to any defect notification within the specified period.

The official schedule currently lists January 4, 2027 for the city allotment notification. The admit card download date is currently listed as TBA.

Why Is GATE Important?

A valid GATE score can be used for admission to eligible Master's and Doctoral programmes in areas including Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and other disciplines, depending on the institute and programme requirements.

A qualifying GATE score may also be used for financial assistance in eligible programmes. In addition, some Public Sector Undertakings use GATE scores as part of their recruitment processes. However, GATE qualification by itself does not guarantee admission, scholarship or PSU employment; individual institutions and organizations have their own eligibility and selection criteria.
