The Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) 2027 is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) for admission to undergraduate Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) programmes at participating institutes.

Candidates planning to appear for UCEED 2027 must satisfy the prescribed age limit, number-of-attempts restriction and qualifying examination requirements. They should also understand that eligibility to appear for the examination differs from eligibility for admission to a particular B.Des. programme.

Students from Science, Commerce, and Arts and Humanities streams can appear for UCEED 2027 if they meet the examination eligibility criteria. However, the subjects studied in Class 12 can affect which participating institutes they are eligible to join.

Candidates must satisfy all three examination eligibility criteria simultaneously. Meeting only the age requirement or educational qualification is not sufficient.

1. UCEED 2027 Age Limit

The UCEED 2027 age limit depends on the candidate's category.

Category

Date of Birth Requirement

OPEN

Born on or after 1 October 2002

EWS

Born on or after 1 October 2002

OBC-NCL

Born on or after 1 October 2002

SC

Born on or after 1 October 1997

ST

Born on or after 1 October 1997

PwD

Born on or after 1 October 1997

Candidates should use the date of birth recorded in their valid supporting documents and select their category correctly during registration.

The category entered in the registration database is final under the published UCEED 2027 rules. Candidates should carefully review the official instructions before submitting the application.

2. UCEED 2027 Number of Attempts

Candidates can appear for UCEED a maximum of two times, in consecutive years.

A candidate who has already used both permitted attempts cannot appear for UCEED again. Candidates should therefore check their previous examination history before registering.

UCEED scores are valid for one year and only for admission to the corresponding academic year. A score from an earlier UCEED examination cannot be carried forward indefinitely for future admission cycles.

3. UCEED 2027 Educational Qualification

Candidates must have appeared for their Class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination for the first time in 2026 or 2027 to be eligible for UCEED 2027.

The examination is open to students from Science, Commerce, and Arts and Humanities streams, subject to the prescribed rules.

Candidates who first appeared for their qualifying examination in 2025 or earlier are generally not eligible to appear for UCEED 2027. However, the official examination eligibility rules include a specific exception for candidates whose boards declared the results for the 2024–25 academic year on or after 30 September 2025. Such candidates may be eligible to appear for UCEED 2027 if they satisfy all the other requirements.

The date on which the board declared the result matters under this exception. A candidate whose individual result was withheld by a board that had declared the relevant results before 30 September 2025 does not qualify for this exception.

Candidates should read the official eligibility notice carefully before applying.

4. Qualifying Examinations Accepted for UCEED

The official UCEED 2027 rules recognise several Class 12 and equivalent qualifications.

These include:

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system conducted by a Central or State Board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examinations conducted by a recognised board or university.

  • The Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), with at least five subjects.

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations at the Advanced (A) level from London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka.

  • The International Baccalaureate Diploma and other recognised equivalent qualifications.

  • H.S.C. vocational examinations.

  • Certain public-school, university or foreign-board qualifications recognised as equivalent to Class 12.

  • A diploma of at least three years' duration recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or a State Board of Technical Education, subject to the official rules.

Candidates with qualifications obtained outside India or from a board not specifically listed may need to provide an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities.

Important: A qualification accepted for appearing in UCEED does not automatically establish eligibility for B.Des. admission at every participating institute. The institute-specific admission rules must also be satisfied.

5. UCEED Eligibility for Science, Commerce and Arts Students

Students from all major academic streams can appear for UCEED 2027 if they fulfil the examination requirements.

Science Students

Students from the Science stream can appear for UCEED, subject to the age, attempt and qualifying examination rules. However, the subjects studied in Class 12 determine their eligibility for particular B.Des. programmes.

Commerce Students

Commerce students can appear for UCEED 2027. Those who qualify must check which participating institutes accept their Class 12 subject combination for B.Des. admission.

Arts and Humanities Students

Arts and Humanities students can also appear for UCEED 2027 if they meet the prescribed eligibility conditions. Admission to participating institutes remains subject to the relevant Class 12 subject requirements.

Students Appearing for Class 12 in 2027

Students appearing for Class 12 or an equivalent examination in 2027 can apply for UCEED 2027, provided they fulfil the relevant rules.

For B.Des. admission, candidates appearing in 2027 must complete all parts of their final qualifying examination by the application deadline, unless an applicable exception is approved through the official process. They must also submit proof of having passed the qualifying examination and meeting the applicable requirements by 30 September 2027.

6. UCEED 2027 B.Des. Admission Eligibility

Qualifying for UCEED and meeting the eligibility criteria for B.Des. admission are two separate requirements.

To apply for B.Des. admission at the seven participating institutes, candidates must meet the applicable age criteria, qualify UCEED 2027 by obtaining a rank, and satisfy the qualifying examination and subject requirements.

The institute-wise subject requirements are as follows.

Students from Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are eligible to apply to all seven participating institutes, provided they meet the other requirements.

Candidates from other streams, including Commerce, Arts and Humanities, and Science without the prescribed subject combination, are eligible to apply to IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and IIT Indore under the published UCEED 2027 admission rules.

The official admission criteria state that candidates must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination in 2026 or 2027. Candidates whose first appearance was in 2025 or earlier should review the admission rules separately, even if they qualify for the specific examination-eligibility exception described above.

7. Is There a Minimum Percentage Requirement for UCEED 2027?

Candidates should distinguish between the requirements for taking UCEED and the requirements for B.Des. admission.

The official examination eligibility criteria focus on age, number of attempts and the qualifying examination. Candidates must also meet the programme-specific admission conditions of the participating institute.

The published UCEED 2027 admission eligibility criteria require candidates to have passed the relevant Class 12 or equivalent qualification and to meet the applicable subject requirements. Candidates should consult the current information brochure and institute-specific admission notices for any additional academic requirements.

8. UCEED Eligibility for Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO Candidates

Foreign nationals can appear for UCEED 2027 if they satisfy the examination eligibility criteria.

The official admission criteria also apply to foreign applicants. However, the admission route, available seats and category treatment can differ.

The UCEED 2027 rules state that foreign-national seats are supernumerary and capped at 10% of the total seats in a programme. OCI/PIO cardholders should review the official rules regarding the date their cards were issued, reservation eligibility and applicable admission categories.

Candidates should check the information brochure for documentation and application procedures specific to their nationality or status.

9. Important Documents for UCEED Eligibility Verification

Candidates should prepare the documents needed to establish their eligibility and support the information supplied during registration.

These may include:

  • A valid proof of date of birth, such as a Class 10 certificate, passport or birth certificate.

  • Class 12 marksheets or certificates, where available.

  • The prescribed certificate for candidates appearing in Class 12 in 2027.

  • Valid SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS or PwD documentation, where applicable.

  • An equivalence certificate for qualifications requiring recognition.

  • A valid OCI/PIO document for applicants to whom the relevant rules apply.

The precise document requirements and formats must be checked in the official UCEED 2027 information brochure.

10. How to Check UCEED 2027 Eligibility

Candidates can verify their eligibility using the following steps:

  1. Check the official age limit according to the applicable category.

  2. Confirm that the number of previous UCEED attempts is within the permitted limit.

  3. Verify the first year of appearance in Class 12 or the equivalent qualifying examination.

  4. Check whether the qualifying examination is recognised under the official rules.

  5. Review the specific subject requirements for the B.Des. institute or institutes being considered.

  6. Prepare the required supporting documents before registering or applying for admission.

Candidates who are unsure about an examination-equivalency rule or a specific eligibility condition should contact the UCEED-CEED office through the official contact details.
