NMAT 2026 Section-Wise Exam Pattern
1. Language Skills
The Language Skills section evaluates English proficiency, reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar. It contains 36 questions, and candidates have 28 minutes to complete this section.
Candidates should practise understanding passages, identifying grammatical errors, completing sentences and recognising relationships between words.
2. Quantitative Skills
The Quantitative Skills section tests mathematical ability, numerical reasoning and data interpretation. It contains 36 questions with a time limit of 52 minutes.
Preparation should cover arithmetic, algebra, number properties, probability, data interpretation and data sufficiency. Candidates need to balance calculation speed with accuracy.
3. Logical Reasoning
The Logical Reasoning section measures analytical thinking, the ability to assess arguments and the ability to draw logical conclusions. It contains 36 questions and has a time limit of 40 minutes.
Important preparation areas include critical reasoning, deductions, analytical puzzles, syllogisms, seating arrangements and other reasoning problems.
NMAT Marking Scheme and Scoring System
NMAT uses a scaled scoring system rather than simply reporting the number of questions answered correctly.
Each section has a score range of 12 to 120, while the total score ranges from 36 to 360. The final scores are calculated using GMAC's scoring methodology, which takes account of the difficulty of the questions answered.
There is no negative marking for incorrect answers. However, candidates must manage the time allotted to each section and answer as many questions as they can within the permitted duration.
The scaled score should not be confused with a percentage of correct answers or a percentile ranking. Business schools may apply their own admission and shortlisting requirements.
Important Rules for the NMAT Exam
Sectional Time Limits
Each section has its own time limit. The unused time from one section cannot be transferred to another section.
Choice of Section Order
Candidates can choose the order in which they attempt Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning at the beginning of the examination.
No Returning to a Completed Section
Once candidates complete a section and move to the next one, they cannot return to the previous section. They should therefore review their answers within the permitted section time.
Computer-Adaptive Examination
NMAT uses a computer-adaptive testing approach. Questions are presented one at a time, and the question-selection and scoring process takes account of the candidate's performance. The exact difficulty and question sequence can vary between candidates.
How to Prepare According to the NMAT Exam Pattern
Start by taking a diagnostic mock test to understand your strengths and weaknesses across the three sections.
For Language Skills, practise reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. For Quantitative Skills, strengthen arithmetic, algebra and data interpretation while improving calculation speed. For Logical Reasoning, work on analytical puzzles, deductions and critical-reasoning questions.
Use timed practice tests to become comfortable with the 28-minute, 52-minute and 40-minute section limits. After each test, review incorrect answers and identify topics where you lose the most time.
Candidates should refer to the official NMAT information and preparation resources for the latest examination rules.
