The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor appointments and PhD admission. Candidates who qualify for the relevant category can apply to eligible universities and research institutions, subject to the institution's admission rules.

There is no single centralised UGC NET counselling portal that allocates PhD seats across all universities. Candidates must apply separately to the institutions offering their chosen research subject and complete the required selection process.

PhD Admission Through UGC NET: Important Points

Candidates should consider the following before applying:

  • Category 1: Qualifies candidates for JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission, subject to applicable rules.

  • Category 2: Qualifies candidates for Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission, but not JRF.

  • Category 3: Qualifies candidates for PhD admission only.

For PhD admission under Categories 2 and 3, the December 2026 UGC NET rules specify 70% weightage for NET marks and 30% for the interview or viva voce. The NET score used for PhD admission under these categories is valid for one year from the result declaration date. <Cite refs={["turn742034search0","turn742034search31"]}/>

How to Choose a University Accepting UGC NET

Before submitting an application, candidates should confirm that the university offers a PhD in their intended subject and accepts the candidate's UGC NET qualification category. They should also review academic eligibility, available research areas, supervisor availability, seat intake, application dates, interview requirements and any additional selection conditions.

A valid UGC NET score does not automatically guarantee admission. Universities may shortlist candidates based on their marks, research interests and interview performance, in accordance with the applicable regulations and admission notice.

Official Websites

Candidates can check admission notifications directly through these official resources:
