2. UGC NET 2026 Eligibility for Final-Year Master's Students

Candidates pursuing a Master's degree, awaiting their final-year results or whose qualifying examinations have been delayed may apply provisionally.

However, qualifying in UGC NET does not remove the requirement to complete the qualifying degree. Candidates must fulfil the prescribed academic requirements within the deadline specified by NTA:

  • For JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility: Complete the Master's degree or equivalent qualification within two years from the date of the NET result, with the required percentage.

  • For PhD admission-only qualification: Complete the Master's degree or equivalent qualification within one year from the date of the NET result, with the required percentage.

Candidates who fail to meet the applicable conditions within the specified period will be treated as disqualified under the bulletin's rules.

3. UGC NET Eligibility Through a Four-Year Bachelor's Degree

Candidates who have completed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor's degree programme can apply through a separate eligibility route, subject to the prescribed marks and other conditions.

The minimum aggregate marks requirement is:

Eligible reserved and other specified categories

70%, where the prescribed 5% relaxation applies

The relaxation may apply to candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC-NCL, differently-abled, EWS and other categories as determined under the applicable UGC rules.

Important: Candidates qualifying through the four-year undergraduate degree route may be eligible for JRF and PhD admission, but they are not eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor through this route.

Candidates in the final semester or year of an eligible four-year undergraduate programme may also apply provisionally. If they qualify, they must fulfil the applicable UGC PhD Regulations within the prescribed period: two years for JRF qualification or one year for PhD-admission-only qualification.

4. UGC NET 2026 Age Limit

The age limit depends on the qualification category selected by the candidate.

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

For UGC NET December 2026, candidates applying for JRF must be not more than 30 years of age as specified in the official bulletin, which uses December 1, 2026, as the reference date.

Assistant Professor

There is no upper age limit for appearing in UGC NET for Assistant Professor eligibility.

PhD Admission

There is no upper age limit for appearing in UGC NET for PhD admission.

The age limit for JRF does not apply to the Assistant Professor or PhD-admission-only categories.

5. UGC NET JRF Age Relaxation

The official bulletin provides age relaxation for eligible candidates applying for JRF.

Candidate Category or Circumstance

Age Relaxation

OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, Third Gender candidates and women applicants

Up to 5 years

Candidates with qualifying research experience

Up to 5 years, subject to the stated conditions

Candidates holding an LL.M. degree

Candidates with qualifying armed-forces service

Up to 5 years, subject to the prescribed conditions

The combined age relaxation under the specified grounds cannot exceed five years. Candidates must satisfy the documentation and other conditions laid down in the official bulletin to claim relaxation.

6. UGC NET 2026 Subject Selection Rules

Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their postgraduate qualification. If the postgraduate subject is not included in the official list of UGC NET subjects, candidates may choose a related subject.

Applicants should check the subject codes and eligibility instructions listed in Annexure II of the December 2026 Information Bulletin before submitting the application form.

Candidates with a four-year bachelor's degree may choose a subject in which they want to pursue a PhD, irrespective of the discipline of their undergraduate degree, in accordance with the bulletin's rules.

7. Eligibility for JRF, Assistant Professor and PhD Admission

UGC NET has different qualification categories, and candidates should select the intended option carefully during registration.

JRF and Assistant Professor: Candidates qualifying for JRF are also eligible for Assistant Professor consideration under the applicable rules, and may pursue research subject to placement and fellowship requirements.

Assistant Professor and PhD Admission: Candidates qualifying under this category are eligible for Assistant Professor consideration and PhD admission, but are not awarded JRF through this category.

PhD Admission Only: Candidates qualifying under this category can use their result for PhD admission under the applicable regulations. This category does not provide JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility.

Meeting the examination eligibility conditions does not guarantee a fellowship, teaching appointment or admission to a PhD programme. Institutions follow their own selection and admission procedures.

8. Eligibility for Candidates with Foreign Qualifications

Candidates holding degrees or equivalent qualifications from foreign educational institutions should check the recognition and equivalence requirements specified by UGC.

The December 2026 bulletin advises such candidates to obtain equivalence of their qualifications from UGC where applicable. Candidates holding a postgraduate diploma awarded by an Indian institute should also verify whether it is equivalent to a recognised Master's degree, including through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), where required.

Important Instructions for UGC NET December 2026 Applicants

  • Check whether you qualify through the Master's degree route or the four-year bachelor's degree route.

  • Verify your minimum marks and category-specific relaxation.

  • Check the JRF age limit and the reference date in the official bulletin.

  • Select your subject according to the prescribed subject-selection guidance.

  • Keep supporting academic and category documents available in case verification is required.

  • Read the full Information Bulletin before completing the application form.

NTA treats applications as provisional and may cancel candidature if ineligibility is identified at any stage.
