UGC NET December 2026 Counselling and Admission Process

Full page

The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor appointments and PhD admission under the applicable qualification categories.

After the UGC NET December 2026 result is declared, qualified candidates can proceed with the relevant fellowship, teaching recruitment or PhD admission process. The next steps depend on the qualification category obtained and the rules of the institution to which the candidate applies.

There is no single centralised UGC NET counselling process for all universities and colleges. NTA conducts the examination and declares results, while higher education institutions manage their own PhD admissions, recruitment procedures, interviews and final selections.

The exact selection process differs according to the qualification category and the institution's rules.

Step 1: Check the UGC NET 2026 Result

After the examination, candidates should visit the official UGC NET website to access their result and scorecard.

The result determines which qualification category a candidate has achieved. Candidates should verify their subject, marks or percentile details and qualification status before applying for further opportunities.

Qualifying UGC NET does not automatically guarantee a university seat, teaching appointment or fellowship placement. Candidates must satisfy the applicable eligibility requirements and complete the relevant selection procedure.

Step 2: Understand the Three UGC NET Qualification Categories

The December 2026 Information Bulletin identifies three qualification categories.

Category 2

Category 3

Candidates should use their official result category to determine the appropriate next steps.

Category 1: JRF and Assistant Professor

Candidates qualifying under Category 1 are eligible for JRF and Assistant Professor consideration, as well as PhD admission, subject to the applicable rules.

Those seeking a PhD should apply to universities or research institutions offering a suitable programme and complete the institution's admission procedure. The official bulletin states that JRF-qualified candidates are admitted to PhD programmes through an interview in accordance with the applicable UGC PhD Regulations.

A JRF qualification does not itself guarantee admission to a particular university or research department. Candidates must apply for available opportunities and meet institutional requirements.

Category 2: Assistant Professor and PhD Admission

Candidates qualifying under Category 2 are eligible for Assistant Professor appointments and PhD admission, but not for the award of JRF through this category.

For PhD admission, the UGC NET score can be used in place of an entrance test conducted by the university or higher education institution, subject to the institution's applicable admission rules.

The official bulletin specifies that PhD selection for Category 2 candidates uses 70% weightage for UGC NET marks and 30% for the interview or viva voce. Candidates should check the university's admission notice for application deadlines and further requirements.

Category 3: PhD Admission Only

Candidates qualifying under Category 3 are eligible for PhD admission only. This category does not provide eligibility for JRF or Assistant Professor appointments.

Universities and higher education institutions may use the UGC NET score in place of their own PhD entrance examination, subject to applicable rules. The official bulletin specifies 70% weightage for UGC NET marks and 30% for the interview or viva voce in the PhD selection process.

The UGC NET marks for PhD admission under Categories 2 and 3 remain valid for one year from the date of declaration of the UGC NET result.

Step 3: Apply to Universities and Research Institutions

Candidates seeking PhD admission should identify universities and research institutions that offer their chosen subject or research area.

The general application process involves:

  1. Checking the university's PhD admission notification and eligibility requirements.

  2. Reviewing available research areas, supervisors and seats, where the information is published.

  3. Completing the institution's application form and paying the prescribed application fee.

  4. Uploading academic records, the UGC NET scorecard and other requested documents.

  5. Attending the interview, viva voce or any additional selection stage required by the institution.

Some institutions may ask candidates to submit a research proposal or statement of research interests. Candidates should follow the relevant university's instructions because these requirements are not identical across all institutions.

Step 4: UGC NET Weightage for PhD Admission

For candidates qualifying under Category 2 or Category 3, the December 2026 Information Bulletin specifies the following weightage:

Selection Component

Weightage

UGC NET marks

70%

Interview / Viva Voce

30%

Total

100%

The university or higher education institution evaluates candidates according to the combined merit of the UGC NET score and interview or viva voce performance.

Candidates should confirm the admission procedure with each institution. Universities may specify additional eligibility checks, research requirements, document-verification procedures and seat-allocation rules in accordance with applicable regulations.

Step 5: Attend the Interview or Viva Voce

The interview or viva voce is an important stage in PhD admission. It may assess the candidate's subject knowledge, research interests, understanding of the proposed research area and readiness to undertake doctoral research.

Candidates should prepare to discuss their postgraduate studies, academic interests and any proposed research topic. Where required, they should also carry their research proposal and supporting academic documents.

The interview schedule, format and assessment requirements are announced by the university or research institution—not through one common UGC NET counselling calendar.

Step 6: Check the Final Merit List and Confirm Admission

After completing the required selection stages, the university or institution prepares its final selection list according to its admission rules and available seats.

Selected candidates may need to complete document verification, submit original academic certificates, pay admission fees and fulfil registration requirements by the prescribed deadline.

A UGC NET score does not guarantee PhD admission. Selection depends on the candidate's qualification category, applicable score validity, performance in the required interview and the institution's final admission criteria.

UGC NET 2026 Admission Process for Assistant Professor Recruitment

Candidates eligible for Assistant Professor appointments should apply separately when universities, colleges or other eligible institutions advertise teaching vacancies.

The recruitment authority determines the essential qualifications, subject requirements, application procedure, interview or other selection stages and final appointment decision. UGC NET eligibility is an important qualification, but it does not automatically result in a teaching appointment.

Candidates should monitor the official recruitment websites of their preferred institutions and check the specific requirements listed in each vacancy notification.

UGC NET 2026 JRF and Fellowship Process

Candidates qualifying under Category 1 may apply for relevant research opportunities and PhD programmes that accept their qualification.

JRF-qualified candidates should check the fellowship and PhD admission requirements published by the relevant university, research institution or authority. They must complete any required admission interview and satisfy the applicable joining, verification and fellowship formalities.

Qualifying for JRF does not itself guarantee a position at a specific research institution. Candidates must follow the relevant application and selection procedure.
